Therapy for Chronic Illness

HELPING YOU BUILD SELF-COMPASSION IN AN ABLEIST WORLD

Chronic illness and disability change our lives in many ways and are often accompanied by stress and emotional distress. Since physical health and mental health are interconnected, chronic health conditions frequently take a toll on our mental well-being. Managing symptoms, navigating the medical industrial complex, adjusting to changes in functioning and relationships, and living in an ableist, late-capitalist, neoliberal society are all heavy burdens to bear. And although different people and different illnesses have their own unique attributes, it’s common for people with chronic health conditions to struggle with anxiety and depression.

I bring my own lived experience with chronic illness to my therapeutic work helping people who experience chronic health conditions. Whether you’re dealing with a new condition or have been living with chronic illness for years, I can help you learn skills to manage your illness while also living your life.

Therapy approaches that focus on mind and body can be especially effective in the treatment of chronic illness. We may use somatic (body-based) approaches such as mindfulness or breathing exercises, incorporate EMDR to heal from medical trauma, incorporate art as a relaxing sensory experience, or build self-compassion to unlearn the internalized ableism that often gets in the way of us connecting with ourselves and our communities.

You deserve to feel acceptance and self-worth.
